Tooth Decay 101: Signs and Prevention

Tooth decay happens when plaque builds up and eats away at your enamel. It’s a very common condition – but don’t stress yet! It is treatable, especially if you catch it early.

If you want a beautiful smile that lasts, be on the lookout for tooth decay!

Stages of Tooth Decay

Tooth decay looks different depending on the stage you’re in, and the earlier you catch it, the better.

Here’s a look at the stages:

  • Stage 1: Your enamel loses some of its minerals due to exposure to the bacteria in plaque.
  • Stage 2: The enamel weakens, and small holes form in your teeth.
  • Stage 3: The decay reaches the dentin beneath the enamel, causing tooth sensitivity.
  • Stage 4: The pulp inside the tooth becomes damaged, causing swelling and toothaches.
  • Stage 5: An infection begins inside the pulp and pus forms, resulting in an abscess.

Signs You Have Tooth Decay

In the early stages, it’s harder to identify it – unless you see a dentist. The following symptoms serve as a warning signal that you should not ignore:

Toothache

This is the most common symptom. It can occur when eating or sometimes randomly throughout the day.

Tooth sensitivity

As the enamel weakens, and the decay impacts your dentin, hot and cold beverages can impact the nerves in your teeth.

You may also feel this sensitivity when having sugary treats as the acid in sweets is harmful to your teeth, causing more pain.

Staining

In the early stages, you may notice a white spot on your tooth. As tooth decay progresses, it’ll turn a darker brown color.

Hole in your tooth

The stain can progress to a hole in your tooth which is the most obvious sign of tooth decay – because you’re staring right at it!

You may be able to spot the hole, but it’ll be harder to see if it’s in a crevice or between your teeth.

How To Prevent It

Finding a gaping hole in your tooth is quite the scare! To avoid that, follow these tips:

  • Visit your dentist twice a year for dental cleanings and check-ups – they’ll either catch it early or stop it from happening altogether!
  • Brush your teeth every morning and every night before bed to get rid of plaque.
  • Floss once daily to clean the areas your toothbrush can’t reach.
  • Use fluoride toothpaste to remineralize your teeth and protect your enamel
  • Consult your dentist about preventative treatments such as fluoride treatment.
  • Avoid sugary treats like soda, candy, chocolate, juice, etc.
  • Have water after meals to rinse out food particles that could cause plaque.

Tooth decay can sneak up on you if you’re not careful and it can be quite a nuisance. If you want to avoid any major treatments down the road, make sure to practice good oral hygiene.
